DINWIDDIE, VA (Oct 22nd – Oct 24th) – John Strickland took the coveted Pro Boost Championship title in a nail-biting finish in the Proline Racing Brian Olson Memorial World finals at Virginia Motorsports Park this past weekend.
No less than 4 drivers and teams were in contention to win the World Title and it all came down to the semi-finals on Saturday night. Coming into this event Strickland, Jason Harris, Kevin Rivenbark and Johnny Camp all had an opportunity to ‘mathematically’ win the Championship.
The PDRA season had a ‘later than normal’ start due to COVID 19 but got underway on May 29th at Galot Motorsports Park where Strickland made a strong start getting to the finals, but coming up a little short to the blown entry of Melanie Salemi and finishing in Runner Up position.
The series then headed off to Darlington Raceway on June 10th, where the Galot Motorsports teammates, Strickland and Rivenbark faced off in the final round for the first time since 2016. Qualifying 6th and 5th respectively, they found themselves at opposing sides of the ladder and managed to work their way to the final pair. Strickland left first and got to the stripe first, handing him is first (and only) win of the season.
Strickland top qualified with a 3.680 at the Proline Racing Mid Atlantic Showdown in July at Virginia Motorsports Park and again at the final race with a 3.648, no doubt helping him get additional points to clinch the deal.
“Well, seeing how we’re less than a hundred points ahead of Jason (Harris), that will definitely help us out with [the championship chase],” Strickland said. “We just need to maintain and last a round longer. I’m excited about running for a championship. This is the first time that I've been able to contend each event, normally my tractor pulling duties overlap and I can't get to every one" John explained. "I’d love to have a championship, just like everybody else out here racing. I think it would say a lot about teaming up with Proline and all the guys we partner up with to get us here. It’s all about all these guys working hard. It would be good for them. They did it last year with Kevin [Rivenbark]. If we could do it again this year, it would say a lot about the team.” John said.
In the end, it came down to the semi-finals, with his closest rival, Jason Harris and Party Time Racing being only a round behind in the points standing. Both contestants lost in the semi-final but Jason’s loss was John’s gain – in a second the World Championship title went to John Strickland.
